Elisabeth Hower

Founder & Head Trainer

Monty Roberts Certified Instructor

Elisabeth Hower is dedicated to cultivating harmonious partnerships between horses and riders of all levels. Her approach emphasizes the relationship, understanding and communication. With a strong foundation in equine psychology and non-violent training methods, Elisabeth is adept at working with horses of varying backgrounds, including those with trauma or limited experience, as well as riders seeking to deepen their connection with their equine partners. Her strong communication skills and innate emotional intelligence enable Elisabeth to adapt to meet the needs and learning style of both horse and rider. Her program includes groundwork and ridden work, with relaxation and emotional attunement her foremost focus. She believes that real horsemanship requires looking within, and the best way to connect to your horse is to connect with yourself first.

Elisabeth's lifelong passion for horses began in Pennsylvania, where she developed her skills riding and showing Off-Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) in the hunter/jumper discipline on the A circuit. Her commitment to rescue and rehabilitation was sparked at a young age, and she has since dedicated herself to providing second chances for horses in need. She spent five years working as a trainer with Win Place Home, a non-profit organization, where she specialized in retraining and rehoming OTTBs. She continues to run their Post Adoption Program, and is devoted to removing barriers connecting new horse owners with their perfect retirees.

Elisabeth's expertise is underpinned by her certification as a Monty Roberts Instructor, achieved through intensive study at Flag is Up Farms. To date, she is the fastest to complete certification. Her experience working with feral, remedial, and untouched horses, including mustangs, has provided her with a unique understanding of equine behavior and communication. She continues her studies of equine behavioral science, psychology and Poly-Vagal Theory.

At Willow River Equestrian, Elisabeth focuses on building sound horsemanship through clear communication, patience, and a deep understanding of the horse's perspective. She believes that by listening closely to the horse, we can unlock their potential and create lasting partnerships built on trust and mutual respect. Her goal is to create a supportive and enriching learning environment for both horses and riders, fostering a deeper connection and understanding within the equestrian community.
